Day 11: a day with the family, and a real slice shipped

The day belonged to a family barbecue, from the morning shop to near midnight, and I am at peace with that. In the windows I had at the desk, the Handyman auth slice landed and got verified. The honest other half was an hour and a half lost to Instagram and Tinder.

Also written Monday. The honest headline for Sunday is that the day belonged to the family, and I am glad it did.

The day

A barbecue with the family, from the morning shop around ten through to near midnight. That filled the day, and I am at peace with where the time went. People are not a line item to feel bad about. I just want to be conscious that it happened, and count it as what it was.

What shipped

In the windows I did have at the desk, the work was real. The Handyman auth slice landed and got verified: magic-link sign-in for dev, phone OTP for production, the users bootstrap on first login, and the protected routes behind it. The Supabase backend got initialized with the migrations applied underneath. A few short windows, and an actual slice of the product moved. That is the kind of win I keep underselling, so I am naming it plainly.

The other half

And the honest other half. About an hour and a half went to Instagram and Tinder, with some gaming on top. That is drift, not life, and the difference matters. The family time was a choice. The scrolling was the gap between the choices, and the gap is where I leak.

Targets

  • Family time, the Sunday barbecue
  • If a window opens, push Handyman forward

Wins

  • Handyman Slice 1 auth landed and got verified. Magic-link for dev, phone OTP for production, the users bootstrap on first login, and protected routes behind it, with the Supabase backend initialized and the migrations applied. Real product progress in a few short windows.
  • A full day with the family. The barbecue ran from the morning shop to near midnight, and I am at peace with where that time went. People are not a loss.

Losses

  • About an hour and a half on Instagram and Tinder, plus some gaming on top. That is the honest other half of the day, and it is drift.
  • Marketing still untouched. The biggest blocker held flat again.

Lessons

  • A short, aimed window still ships something real. The auth slice proves the work does not need a whole day, it needs a target.
  • The in-between time is where I leak. Around the family and the work, the unplanned gaps went to the phone. Plan the gaps or they plan themselves.
  • Family time is not the thing to optimize away. The drift is. Keep the two separate in the accounting.
