Day 8: a slow day, and an honest look at why

A slow day I have to be honest about. A lot of AI experimentation that was, underneath, avoidance of the high-friction marketing and admin work I keep deferring. The bright spot was not in my hands today: Handyman crossed into real signups.

Some days the honest entry is the useful one. Today was slow, and the reason it was slow is worth writing down.

The bright spot was not mine

Handyman crossed into real signups. Ten on the waitlist, three of them my own testers, so seven real people who found Marido de Aluguel and put their name down on their own. The signup flow wired to the demo the night before is doing its job. The best thing that happened today happened while I was busy with other things, which is exactly how it should work, and it is the clearest signal yet that the thing is wanted.

What I avoided

I spent a lot of the day on AI experimentation. Framed generously, it is learning. Framed honestly, it was avoidance. The work I should have sat down with is the OneProposal marketing, and it carries friction: decisions I have not made, research I have not done, long focused sessions I have not booked. So I did the thing with less friction and told myself it counted.

It was not nothing. But there were better returns available for the same hours, and I did not take them.

The admin backlog is the other half of the avoidance. The legal read-in on where to incorporate, the United States or Brazil, which Handyman forces because its payments need a Brazilian banking connection. The last German ties to cut. An Upwork migration with a deadline this weekend that I have carried all week. All of it still sitting there tonight.

The reset

I went to the beach, read, almost finished Sapiens, walked back through the city, got an ice cream, and looked up to find it was nearly midnight. A good recharge. The trick is not to confuse the recharge with the work.

A note for later, not today: I want to write about the digital minimalism side of this, the deliberately limited phone and why it helps. Another time.

Targets

  • Sit down with the OneProposal marketing work I keep pushing off
  • Chip at the high-friction admin: the legal read-in, the registration, the Upwork migration
  • Build, not just talk about building

Wins

  • Handyman crossed into real signups. Ten on the list, three of them testers, so seven real people who found Marido de Aluguel and put their name down. The demo-to-signup flow I shipped the night before is working, and people are walking through it on their own. The most encouraging thing today happened without me touching it.
  • Pointed a collaborator at a concrete marketing lane for OneProposal, Reddit and YouTube, so it can move without me holding every piece of it.

Losses

  • I avoided the work that mattered. The marketing block has real friction, decisions to make, research to sit through, deep sessions to grind, and I let AI experimentation stand in for it. It was not wasted time and it was not busy-work, but the honest read is that I dodged the high-friction thing and did the lower-return thing instead.
  • The admin pile is still standing. The legal read-in on where to incorporate, US versus Brazil, which Handyman's payments force because they need a Brazilian banking connection. Cutting the last German ties. An Upwork migration due by the weekend that I have pushed all week. None of it moved today.
  • The OneProposal marketing strategy is mine to define. I can hand a collaborator the execution, but not the plan, and I did not move the plan today.

Lessons

  • Busy is not productive. The day was not empty, but the return on the hours was lower than the work I stepped around.
  • Avoidance dressed as exploration is still avoidance. The honest test of a day is whether I touched the thing with the most friction, not whether I was at the desk.
  • The high-friction work does not clear itself. A reset matters, the ukulele, the beach, the book, but it is a recharge, not a substitute for sitting down with the hard thing.
